Doping In The Olympics: A Theoretical Analysis

Many defenders of using doping maintain that using PEDs increases the excitement and the rating of competitions. In fact, they may be accurate since the athletes who are doped can perform more excelling and entertaining. Therefore, the better performances we have, the more rating and entertaining we get. For example, one of the best races in the World is men’s 100m finals in the Olympics. If the athlete who competes in this race uses doping and breaks a record, people are going to be exciting and astonishing. However, using doping is against sports law and unethical. Because according to Pierre de Coubertin, who is the founder of the Olympics, definition of “the spirit of the sport” is how we play true (Moller, 2010). Desire to win competition at any cost is harmful to human health and can cause ethical problems. Moreover, using doping in order to be better than their rivals is against sporting ethics and rules. Hence, using doping in professional sport must be illegal. Furthermore, Sullivan (2013) claimed that according to test control between 2008 and 2013, the sport branch which has the highest average level of doping positive tests at the Olympics is cycling with the average of 3.6%. This means 3.6 percent of the tests that have been done between 2008 and 2013 were positive. According to Sullivan (2013) after cycling, weightlifting has the highest rate with the average of 3.0% after that boxing with 2.9%, triathlon with 2.7% and baseball with 2.5%. These tests can be applied to the athletes before or after the competitions also any athlete can be chosen for testing at any time and in any place. If the athlete refuses to give the urine sample or the blood sample for doping tests, the athlete will be punished as used
