Doodle's Death In The Scarlet Ibis

Decent Essays
In the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, one of the characters named doodle got killed during the thunderstorm. The question now is whether or not it is the narrator's fault for his death. In my opinion it wasn’t the narrator's fault for Doodles death. The narrator is (his older brother) who set the odds aside for both himself and doodle achieved many miracles you could say. The odds were against little ol’ Doodle, and then they came after him. Towards the end of this story there was a Scarlet Ibis, it was from somewhere far away, and his dad concluded that it must had come in with a big storm. This bird died, when they saw it it was in very rough shape. When they seen the bird fall from the tree Aunt Nicey pointed out that a dead bird is bad luck, …show more content…
Early in the story when Doodle was born she pointed out that there was something special about him. She was right once again, he learned to sit up without straining himself to death, he even learned to walk. The philosophy that Aunt Nicey gave was right every time she said something. With that, this means that the bad luck from the bird was in the air, it just so happened to pick Doodle. Yes, the narrator could have went back and helped Doodle up, but if bad luck or spirits are chasing you then there are only a couple ways around it. They didn’t seem like the family to have religion or God by their side, so I don’t think there was a way to get around the wave of bad luck. With that he would have died some how in some way, only if the bad luck was after him. So, in my opinion even if the narrator went back to help him Doodle still would have died. So in my oppinion it isn’t the narrator's fault that Doodle died. In my opinion it wasn’t the narrator's fault for the death of his little brother Doodle. Yes, it did seem like Doodles brother could have went back to help him up, but if something was chasing you and there's was nothing you could do about it, then it is going to get you no matter what. There was noting that the family could have done to stop his death. Know they can be happy that they achieved many miracles with doodle, like him being able to

A hurricane caused the scarlet ibis to travel a large distance to a place that it does not belong. The bird is not figuratively out of place like Doodle, however, the ibis is physically in a place that it does not belong. The bird comes much later in the story but shows it is out of place very quickly. This is directly done to have the bird indicate how quickly Doodle's internal isolation is recognized. Doodle, being handicapped, can not participate in many of the activities that his brother can do with ease.…

From the beginning of the story, Brother sees Doodle as a weak resemblance of his own character. In Brother’s eyes, Doodle needs “fixing.” Brother states that, “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him” (Hurst, 489). Brother’s pride is the spark that starts the flame of Doodle’s downfall.…

Doodle’s body as a baby is described as being red (333), and when he dies, his blood stains his skin and his shirt red (344). The Scarlet Ibis is a carefully chosen symbol and is linked and compared with Doodle from the beginning of the plot. Like the Ibis, Doodle is alone, different and singled out; he and the Ibis are weak, sickly and unable to survive in the World and both of them die alone, in storms, away from their homes. Brother does not realize just how alike Doodle and the Ibis are until he holds Doodle's body in his arms at the very end, noticing the red of Doodle's blood and the fragility of his limp body (344).…

According to my evidence Brother is guilty. A reason Brother is guilty for the murder of Doodle is that he had been planning to kill him for years before the actual death. Brother admits to this on page 345 quoting, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” This proves to show that murdering Doodle was not a sudden mistaken death. The death of Doodle was intended and the brother had waited years for a proper chance to make the death look natural.…

The Scarlet Ibis Argument Essay Some people are selfish in such a way that they only affect themselves, but others’ selfishness can hurt those they care about. In the story, The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, brother was one whose selfishness not only affected him, but everyone surrounding him, especially his brother, Doodle. Doodle was not like most kids, he had physical disabilities that were not hard to miss if one was looking at him. Brother didn’t want Doodle to be different, he wanted him to be a normal boy who ran, played sports and everything that he was not.…

Since Doodle had been working so hard, Doodle’s Brother was so focused on making Doodle a normal kid, he really does not care that he is working Doodle, even though the doctor told him not to strenuously work Doodle. Doodle keeps trying to swim and climb and starts to get better, but still barely can do the tasks. A few days before school, Doodle is pushed even harder than before which is obviously not great for Doodle’s heart. When Doodle's brother realized that he should have listened to the doctor about working Doodle too hard, it was too late. This is why Doodles brother is the cause of Doodles…

In addition, because Brother is so successful in teaching Doodle to walk, Brother feels even more pride in his accomplishments. Doodle explains, “I began to believe in my own infallibility” (349). Brother decided to teach Doodle to run, row, swim and climb trees. Certainly, if Doodle were capable of such things; running, rowing, swimming it would give Doodle a richer, fuller…
