Welcome To Dongmakgol Movie Analysis

I generally do not watch war movies; simply because they are too gory and I find them uninteresting. However Welcome to Dongmakgol is a different story. During the Korean war three north Korean and 2 south Korean soldiers accidently cross paths in a village called Dongmakol. They start out as enemies and end up as friends with the help of the villagers. Cliché as it sounds Welcome to Dongmakgol is a breath of fresh air, it is a present filled with humor, friendship, innocence and wrapped and tied up with a ribbon of sadness.
With the opening of the scene, one can see there is a childlike wonder in the eyes of the actress. We later find out her name is Yeo-Il and she is considered the crazy girl in her village. Her happy, childlike image instantly

To me she ends up symbolizing friendship between the villagers and the soldiers. She is the bridge that brings the two sides together. She also symbolizes the innocence of the villagers as well. Little bit of extra information, I instantly recognized the actress, Kang Hye Jung from the movie Oldboy. That movie made a huge impression on me because of the gruesome and uniquely different story. One of the things I really loved about this film was how the film combats serious moments with comedy. Even where there is dark humor for example when the 4 North Korean soldiers are on a mountain cliff and the commander, Lee Su Hwa states as long as they stay with him he can protect them and at the same moment a soldier falls off. This is very dark humor but it still works with the scene. Another example is when soldiers from both sides meet in the village for the first time. The tone is very serious but then the situation cools down with the help of comedy. I think the writer Jin Jang and the director Kwang-Hyun Park did a phenomenal job when it came to balancing out the dark moments of war with the perfect comedic timing. This is what makes the film very unique; it found the perfect

It was depressing to see. Although there were negative outcomes to having war, it also benefited countries in the creation of new jobs and the advancement of technology and weaponry. In my opinion, I believe everyone is able to learn from this movie that violence may seem like the best solution to go, but can cost something money cannot…

One of the themes that most likely wasn’t meant to be shown is that although thought of as necessary, glory-filled, and brave, war is inhumane and unnecessary. Many of the soldiers who fought on Iwo Jima gave their experiences and opinions on their horrible encounter with the “enemy”. Battle pits human against human, something which makes no sense. A particular line stated by flag-raiser Corporal Rene…

The last fifteen minutes of the movie are an especially good example. In the climax of the movie, the Confederates regain “The General” and a battle with the Northern army ensues. The sequence has the drama and action of warfare with comedic pieces added in. One of the running gags throughout this sequence is that Johnny Gray can’t use his sword correctly. At one point, he brazenly unsheathes his sword, only to have the blade fly out and kill the hidden snipper who was killing of the cannon men.…

War wasn’t fair or peaceful, but unpredictable and devastating. Griffith described how his men had to open fire on civilians because there were North Korean soldiers pushing them towards Griffith. “We had to get at those North Korean soldiers, so we had to open fire, and it wasn’t pleasant, you know. But that was war.” Griffith said this in a way that made human life seem insignificant.…

“It was fascinating on a creative level to have an audience that was so ready to laugh” (Harris). You have to think that any of them were just in a gunfight or at a funeral for that morning (Harris). “I couldn't imagine laughing just hours after being on the battlefield or disarming a bomb” (Harris). Jeff Ross said the stories of individual soldiers are what really put one’s life into perspective, these people are engineers, paratroopers, interrogators, accountants, but they are also human beings and laughter is one of the simplest ways to make that human connection (Harris). “Even though he barely knows them, Ross can easily be touched by the stories of servicemen and women (Harris).…

Many luxuries are granted to the citizens of the U.S. such as technology that helps us get through the day. These luxuries are not available to people in other countries and I believe that if I had to step into one of the four children in the movie On the Way to School I could handle living Carlos’s life. Carlos lives in Argentina and is 11 years old which is near my age, but that is the only thing we have slightly in common. We live completely different lives and Carlos does not have all the luxuries I have. Out of the all the other kids Carlos is the most modern of the four his clothes are similar to mine and he lives in a small house made up of bricks.…

Most military movies go wrong, and just go all action while not creating emotional connections between the audiences and the characters. This one lets you get to know the characters so you actually feel something when they pass away. Another strong point for this movie would be the flow of the plot and how the action is paced. The plot has good flow, and the action seems endless at some points. All in all, Black Hawk Down is a must see, and one of the best military movies of this generation.…

Dictionary.com defines dark humor as “a form of humor that regards human suffering as absurd rather than pitiable, or that considers human existence as ironic and pointless but somehow comic.” In Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, this concept of dark humor is used throughout to convey the actuality of war. By examining all aspects of war, Vonnegut approaches the cruelty of war from a variety of different perspectives in order to craft one, unified thesis about the meaning of war. Kurt Vonnegut proposes that wars are anything but wonderful by using dark humor and comedic techniques to distance the reader from tragedy in the plot in order to broaden the perspective on war as a whole.…
