According to end of year articulation testing, Donavon is able to correctly produce 37/39 phonemes and blends correctly in all word positions at the word level. However, he continues to misarticulate age appropriate sounds when speaking spontaneously.

According to the occupational therapist report, Donavon's level of educational functioning in the area addressed has reached age level and does not adversely affect his academic performance. In reading the case study, “Is This Child Mislabeled,” there is a lot of great information on children with disabilities. In the case study there is a boy named Sergio, who is a third grader from Serbia, where he is now a student at Oakwood Elementary. He has been diagnosed as having a learning disability due to the fact that he tested poorly on the assessments that his new school required. In reading the article, and some very great points for The Iris Center Star Sheet, I believe, that Sergio has, in fact, been mislabeled as having a learning disability; however, with the help of Mrs. Evans, his new resource teacher, he is getting the help that is truly needed. To begin, Sergio was not assessed adequately.…

The article that I chose to read was, The Effects of After-School Tutoring on an Individual ELS Student, written by Amanda Donahue (2002). The purpose of the action research project was to see if by participating in an After-School class with the teacher, the student would stay in school and inspire them to make progress in school. Since motivation is one of the main reasons ELLs drop from school, Ms, Donahue wanted to see if they had motivation and praise the students would increase their grades and performance, and essentially graduate from High School. I chose this article because it felt close to the issue that I am exploring in my action research project, the motivation for Long Term English students and see if I could implement it as…

Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…

The reduced capacity of Bonnie’s fine motor skills is a troubling matter, for both her personal life and academic success. While educators and parents cannot speed up the process of development, they can support children through various methods, helping them strengthen and increase their learning and development. The educator’s response to Bonnie’s situation would not only further hinder her delays by not giving her the experiences she needs to develop but also through the confidence and self-esteem issues that will arise from excluding her from the activities. Owens (2008) states that fine motor skills are the fundamental skills needed to interact with the world and therefore learn.…
