For years immigration in the United States has been a topic divided among the people and Donald Trump’s immigration policy is no different; however it is gaining momentum in his bid for the presidency. Does his policy on immigration harm America? Many Americans would say “no” in today’s global terrorism the government should enact legislation to protect its citizens from criminals and terrorists. Others might argue “yes” that his policy is radical, cruel, and argue that immigrants offer cheap labor by boosting our economy. Linda Chavez states “The federal government now spends more on immigration-enforcement agencies, $16.2 billion in fiscal year 2014, than on all other criminal-law-enforcement agencies combined, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Marshal Service, Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms” (Chavez 13). The results have been positive in reducing the number of illegal immigrants. But, is the cost worth it to stop some hard-working immigrants who help our economy from entering our country? Chavez, a Fox News analyst emphasizes, “The Department of Homeland Security estimates that fewer people crossed our southern border in 2014 than at any time since 1972, and the numbers for the first part of 2015 are down 28 percent compared with last year” (13). It is proof that the spending increase has worked, although at an enormous cost to tax payers. Reihan Salam of the National Review effectively mentions, “Some observers claim that because net migration from Mexico is now negative, there is no longer any need for concern” (22). Davis provides proof that tough new laws on immigration affect some industries and hurt the economy of Arizona. The state of Arizona legislated stringent regulation on immigration. One agricultural business found it hard to find migrant workers to harvest his crop of peppers. His response was to decrease his grounds to finance a large amount of money for a mechanism that would replace the immigrant worker. In turn he was able to cut his workforce and bring in skilled workers.
