It seems this election, it is another day, another scandal for both of our candidates. Recently, a former Apprentice contestant, Summer Zervos, accused Donald Trump of sexual assault. Zervos was a contestant during the 2005 season, and later met with Donald Trump to possibly become an employee at Trump’s business. It was during this time period that Trump allegedly made numerous inappropriate advances towards Zervos. In reference to Trump, Zervos stated,“You treated me as though I was an object to be hit upon”. However, this is not Donald Trump’s first rodeo. How does Donald Trump continue to swim rather than sink, despite the numerous scandals weighing on his campaign and his own image. Firstly, in the issue of determining the veracity of a claim, people often base their opinion off the statements of an authority figure. Different authorities may have different views and messages, and this can lead to a division of opinion amongst people who now have no push to find the truth. People rest in the comfort of the verdict that least disturbs their pre-existing views of a person. Secondly, it is possible that if the scandal is a break from the general public’s pre-existing image of the person, it will be more damaging. People may also experience scandal fatigue, causing each successive scandal to be less and less damaging to a person’s reputation. Finally, the media’s attempts to gain viewership and provide entertainment, not only contribute to the scandal fatigue above, but also to the division of opinion, where people do not have to search very hard to find support for their pre-existing …show more content…
A devoted fan base will first look to Trump for comment on his own scandal, and supplement his statement with the appropriate T.V networks. In addition, his supporters have already been through the storm of sexual assault allegations and they are unlikely to leave the Trump boat now. Other potential voters who may have been disturbed by these allegations are now so sick of hearing about scandals everyday and not as surprised by the scandals because of the reputation and profession of Trump, that the scandal may have less weight in their minds when deciding whether to support Trump. This election and it’s many scandals have shown that scandals are uniquely affected by the involved person’s audience, reputation, and past scandals, while the media makes it easier for a single scandal to be viewed in multiple ways with varying levels of severity by different members of the public. Every scandal is a special snowflake for the person it has latched onto and for Donald Trump one can only guess he will continue to succeed to a certain degree despite scandals, due to his persona, history, supporters, and the
