Rhetorical Analysis Of Donald Trump And The Politics Of Fear '

The slogan that propelled Donald Trump into his influence across the nation, “make America great again,” shows that Trump sees America has fallen downhill and has hopes to improve it. Trump wants to see this country go back to the prosperous country it once was, but he does not know how to filter his words according to most, which makes him seem frightening. Despite Clinton’s accusation about the risk of Donald Trump, his clever use of scare tactics gives voters a sense of security because of his ideas concerning immigration and terrorism.
According to Molly Ball, author of “Donald Trump and the Politics of Fear,” Donald Trump uses fear to his advantage in hopes of winning the presidential election. Today, people in the US are frightened of

David Bennet, a historian, disagrees with the idea that anxiety of illegal immigrants is motivated by the difficulty of finding jobs that are already taken by illegal immigrants (Ball). Ball writes that diversity is the cause for society’s panic because it threatens security and values. I disagree with Bennet and Ball’s views. I think the idea of diversity is a cover up so people do not look selfish when they say they are worried about their jobs. Because undocumented immigrants are willing to be paid less, Americans struggle to compete for the jobs. We have Americans out of work, but foreigners having more jobs than American citizen does not make sense. According to Donald Trump’s website, he wants to “put the needs of working people first” (“Immigration Reform”). This idea leads to Trump’s big plan of building a wall which is needed to prevent illegal immigration. Even though many may think building a wall is rude, I personally think it is just a clever way to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering; however, I do not agree with Trump’s plan to make Mexico pay for the wall. He believes that Mexico is taking advantage of us, but America has always been a country that is willing to help. Even though we are willing to help, we should be stricter about the immigrants that are in this country, and Donald Trump has good ideas to do that. To improve America, Trump’s scare tactics will bring people from different parties and areas of the country to vote for him in this upcoming election. He uses the fears of illegal immigration and terrorism as means of getting people to go vote for him. This election will come down to who can keep U.S. citizens safe, and Trump brings that sense of security to the

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This statement is proven time and time again by David Rothkopf in his Ted Talk about how fear drives America. Although the other candidates have tried to hinder Trump’s momentum, he has still dominated the Republican primaries. Being the driving force Trump is, a voter may wonder why he is so popular. His campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” displays exactly what Trump stands for (Make America Great Again!). His many comments on against Hispanics and other races surprisingly find support among his constituents. The building of a wall on the border of Mexico has been one of Trump’s biggest issues. He claims the funding of this wall will come directly from the Mexican government. He states, “Immigration is a privilege, not a right.” (Make America Great Again). With this ideology, he will cancel many Mexican visas to compel Mexico to fund his wall. Even though Trump uses words like “compel”, he is truly using scare tactics against the Hispanic people (Make America Great Again). Donald Trump’s whole campaign is based out of fear and discrimination, He has alienated almost every minority group, and even his own party does not support his bid to run in the primary election. It can be said that represents the worst parts of the United States. A president’s place is not to separate the people, but to join everyone together in unity. “Make America Great Again” is Trumps campaign logo. It is very powerful and is what everyone in this nation wants. We want to be great again. So I think it covers all five characteristics of images including synthetic, believable, vivid and concrete, simplified, and ambiguous. Trump constructed this logo to serve as a purpose. It serves to get people’s attention as well as get them on board with him. This logo also presents a powerful mental picture that is believable. America can be great again with some changes that Trump can make. This logo represents relief to our nation. It is something that we all want. I don’t think that this logo can get anymore simpler, it is straight to the point, “Make America Great Again”.…

Trump markets himself as a businessman and not a politician; in his campaign announcement speech Trumps keeps referring to himself as the “right guy,” the guy who is going to make America great again. Trumps wants to instill and, more importantly, bring out the skepticism in the public; he claims that America has been brought to near ruin because of the incompetence of America’s current leaders. He attacks and belittles politicians as seen in his speech when, after discussing America’s debt to China,”How stupid are our leaders? How stupid are these politicians to allow this to happen?”(Trump, Donald. “Our Country Needs a Truly Great Leader”Trump Tower, New York City. June 16 2015. Speech) He isn’t throwing smoke without a purpose though, it is all to serve his purpose; the argument he makes is that he is not like the politicians who got America into it’s current debt, but he is the businessman who will get the Nation out of it, and all in the effort to make America great again. This claim, and others like it, are all meant to be the reason why the public should vote for him, and for the most part the arguments are successful. This is not to say that this argument is well constructed or infallible-- Trump spends a lot of time discussing what he will do and not a lot about what he has already done-- but it is a very effective appeal to the ethos. There aren’t numbers…

The rhetoric behind Trump’s plan emphasizes the diction “Radical Islamic Terrorism” and he ostracizes Obama for releasing the $150 billion back to Iran. Allies are essential to his plan and Trump wants to work with Israel, “King Abdullah of Jordan, President Sisi of Egypt, and all others who recognize this ideology of death that must be extinguished” (politico). In fact, he references the Cold War and the ideological tests enforced, and wants to reenact those tests to fight against Radical Islam. Through the State Department and Department of Homeland Security, Trump wants to identity regions where new screening techniques need to be discovered and, until then, stop all visa processing and suspend immigration from those places. He wants to work with the Muslim Community to establish a Commission on Radical Islam that benefit law enforcement in eradicating this issue. Other policies mentioned in the speech includes: keeping Guantanamo Bay open, using drone strikes, capturing high-value targets, and trying foreign combatants in military…

Trump wants to get all illegal immigrants out of the country. But one may ask “How do you expect to get every single illegal to go back to their home country?” His only response to this could be is to build the 10-foot wall. Johnson said “A 10-foot wall just requires an 11-foot ladder.” this does say a lot because people will do anything to be in the United States. Trump wants people to come into our country, he wants to bring people in but all he wants is to be able to do it legally.…

Trump uses imagery to reassure the nation that there is nothing to fear because it is already here. He says “Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities.” This quote provokes fear in the audience. He uses the metaphor “rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation” to give the audience a picture of a what America has come too. He later uses a biblical Allusion to affirm the country that there is nothing to fear, because he is here to fix it. All in all, Trump puts an image of fear in the audiences’ head just to affirm them that they will conqueror the fear together. “America [will be] totally unstoppable.”…
