Don T You Dare Read This Mrs. Dunphrey Book Report

Decent Essays
The book I am currently reading is Don’t You Dare Read This Mrs.Dunphrey. This book is about life’s struggles. The book is about a girl named Tess who realizes that not everything is as easy as it seems. She learns how to take care of a family on her own and she’s only sixteen.

While I am reading, I struggle comprehending stories quickly. I can read a whole page and by the time I am done, I barely know what’s going on. I usually have to go back into the text multiple times and reread just so I could understand. Doing that usually takes a lot of time, that’s why it usually takes me a long time to finish one book. While I am reading something that I’m good at doing is making connections to other texts, personal experiences, and the world.

Since beginning this course, I have been resistant. Ever since Jr. High it has been hard for me to keep a book long enough to stay interested. One way i get involved with the characters is by comparing him/her to me. If not to me, I compare them to other characters. “So now I always tell my students about the Gulf-Stream: that what it means for us, for writers, is that we need to align ourselves with the river of the story” Bird by Bird Anne Lamott. This quote stuck out to me when I first read it, mainly because I am not usually a fan of poetic metaphors. However this is so cohesive it does not just seem as if it is a filler but it adds to the piece. Illustrating her thoughts in a vivid way and drawing a conclusion to her lengthy anecdote, it brings a deeper meaning to an almost unconnected story. The connection to writing and real world events is very important to further our understanding of our individual writing as well as how it can connect from paper to day to day life.…

She became my educator throughout elementary whenever I needed help with literature work outside of school.…

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English.…

In the essay, “ The Lonely Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez,he mentioned to his readers in the very beginning that he was not big reader as a child. Rodriguez writes,” I knew my mother and father could read and write in both, Spanish and English(293).” He also mentions,” their reading consisted of work manuals, prayer books, newspapers, and recipes(Rodriguez 293).” From what Rodriguez writes we can gather that reading was not used very much in his house hold. The lack of reading to the Rodriguez house was the very opposite of mine.…
