Don T Turn Around Noa Toron Quotes

Noa Torson is one of the main characters in Michelle Gagnon’s book Don’t Turn Around. She is mysteriously taken away from her already tough life for an unknown reason. All she knows to do is to run and keep her head down. Although this book is fast-paced, Gagnon takes the time to describe Noa as a person. Through Gagnon’s use of tough situations and direct characterization in Don’t Turn Around the reader is able to gather that Noa is an assertive, intelligent, and a troubled young individual. Noa is an assertive person. When faced with overwhelming predicaments she analyzes her situation. Then she is able to immediately figure out how to escape or deal with the situation. One example of how she says she is assertive is “If I say I’m going to do something, I do it” (Gagnon 45). She is a hacker who has not been to school in over a year because “she figured out how to game the system” (Gagnon 40). Gaming means she hacked the schooling system, making it seem as though she was being home-schooled, or had already finished school. By fooling the system, she shows how intelligent she is because she figures this out in her sophomore year of high school. The reader knows this because on page 143 a girl recognizes Noa and says, “I thought you dropped out.’ The girl’s eyes shifted away. ‘You just, like, never came back’” (Gagnon 143).
