Don T Run Literary Techniques

Throughout the last seven weeks I have learned a lot as a writer through reading works written by Johnson, Dawkins, Barthelme, and King. Through analyzing their techniques and continuing to practice I have become a better fiction writer. These writers have taught me how to use concrete sensory detail to reveal emotion and tone. In addition, they taught me the importance of white space, poetic language, building tension, and creating dialogue that reveals character. While writing my midterm story, Don't Run, I worked to embed many of these elements into the piece.
In the first part of the story, the imagery reveals a sense of peace and tranquility, as well as destruction. Lines such as, "I looked to my left, the river swayed under the light of the autumn moon," and, "The yellow marble rose, covering the forest with a warm orange hue..." reveal the tranquility and peace that nature provides. However, the line, "Droplets punched against the rocks

This is clearly evident in the part where Avyanna first sees the mountain lion, "I dug my fingernails into my sweaty palms so hard that I swear my skin began to break. Okay Vy. It'll be okay. The lion stood motionless. Frozen... I felt the muscles in my legs tense as I got ready to turn and run, when I heard the leaves behind me begin to crunch. My head began to pound, fear swept through my veins."
In addition, I used dialogue throughout the story to reveal character. For example, when Avyanna says, "So, what we just stand here and wait for him to come give us a big hug?" The audience can make the inference that Avyanna uses humor and sarcasm to hide her fear from others.
While I am by no means an extraordinary fiction writer, I can safely say that throughout the past seven weeks through reading these novels, participating in class discussions, and continuing to write I have become a stronger fiction

Although his teachings are not as direct in his book as Zinsser’s, most of his rare advice are just as useful. Donald Murray meticulously developed and laid out ten writing habits he performs in order to hone in on his writing potential. After a self evaluation I came to the realization I possess similar to habits to those of Mr. Murray, but I also have my own. The habit of awareness and connecting seem to interconnect for me. The book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster immediately came to mind. Foster discusses various interpretations of literature through quests, communion, themes, and of course symbols because “Everything is a symbol of something, it seems, until proven otherwise.”…

These lines not only shows Snyder absorbing the imagery of the nature and the beauty of it, for example the beautiful snow of the mountains has provided him with cold water to drink and looking down symbolizes that he realizes the Earth is there just as Buddha did when he touched the earth, they are connected, as well as the awakening or the satori. The still air represents the breaths of meditation, the breaths are still and steady, the world around him is silent and still, and his thoughts are also still. “Piute Creek” In Piute Creek, Snyder describes the imagery of nature as too much, he wrote: One granite ridge A tree, would be enough Or even a rock, a small creek,…

Curiosity and imagination are wonderful things, especially when combined and questions arise. I wonder what the dead do when they die? What does a person feel when they lose something that was hard earned? What do those questions look like when they’re answered in a poem? What do those poems look like when they are brought to life in animation?…

I just finished reading your novel The Swallows of Kabul. Upon reading it, I found that I was able to connect with the plot and characters in a way that allowed me to extract a deeper meaning of the text. Although the text ultimately gave me a deeper understanding of the Islamic culture, some parts of the text made me angry, while other parts surprised me. I also established a connection between this text and another text I read in the past, as they both had some parallelism in the plot line that allowed me to draw an even more interesting relationship. By analyzing my reactions, my past assumptions, and my past transactions with other texts, I found that I was able to create and develop a deeper meaning of the book.…

The different perfectly proportioned elements that Porter was able to capture in one image struck me immediately. I learned from our reading of short fiction that much like poetry, the size of the work does not dictate the depth of the information presented. I learned that often in shorter works it becomes all the more important to focus on the diction and details that the author chooses to included because it is almost always important. I learned that I personally have an easier time analyzing shorter works because they are less likely to include trivial details and wordy explanations of otherwise useless relevant information. In this section I learned how to sharpen my ability to use context clues and decipher a deeper meaning in the authors metaphors and references. I also learn to take a specific idea and tie multiple element of the story to it such as the…

This year in English 10H has allowed me to hone and improve my reading and writing skills. With this class, I have been able to be challenged far more than I would have had I not chosen to stick with an honors class. My writing has improved leaps and bounds over the course of the year due to the large amount of papers we wrote that covered vastly different subject matters. The first paper we wrote to start off the year was a thesis essay based on an independent novel that we read over the summer. In this thesis essay, we had to choose three literary elements that were used skillfully in the book and analyze how they were used to convey the novel’s theme.…
