Don T Kill The Birthday Girl

Before this summer, I didn’t know such things as memoirs ever existed. As a bias fiction-lover, I do admit that I was alreading judging this kind of genre by the description. However, what I realized was that how interesting a book is, all depends on the reader and the writer. If a reader is forced to read then the book won’t be as good because the reader has the mental state of unwilling to read the book. This could also happen when the reader wants to read the book but eventually loses interest due to the poor quality of the writer’s writing. And to be honest both of these have happened when I read my memoir. Spending my summer reading a memoir and do a book project for my english class wasn’t the perfect summer that I imagined. It could be your strongest sword or the cure to anything. As a unwilling reader I spent my summer reading my memoir, Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl, and I became frustrated with myself and the book. It was like running a marathon trying to word by word understand the plot of the book. The beginning was way to slow when the author mention all of the scientific fact about chemical reactions and enzymes. Finally, I had enough, so I went on vacation and I made sure that the book stays safely in my room and not in my suitcase. When I picked up the book after I came back, I had a whole new point of view. The author’s style of writing stayed the same but I did enjoy the book a lot more with a more positive attitude. I was able to be in the shoes of the author and see all the significance of her life. There wasn’t a huge impact on me after reading this, but I was able to develop a bigger understanding of literature and the people around me. I learned that memoir is by far my favorite non-fiction genre because it doesn’t brag as much on accomplishment in life and the writing style isn’t like a history

She wrote this book so beautifully it opened my eyes, I constantly complain about my parents and how they are so noisy about knowing what is going on in my life. It is better to have noisy parents then irresponsible ones. She used such powerful words that made you want to continue reading. The strengths of this book are that is it an easy read, it makes you grateful and also it opens your eyes and makes you realize that not everyone’s family life is just like yours, some people are raised differently than you are. Even though I really enjoyed this book I did find a few weaknesses, one being that at times it was difficult to read and not because of the wording but because of the content.…

I also liked it because it made me think about how unfairly some people are treated for something they can not control. Like there skin color or there gender. It is sad to think that people are automatically judged for that. It has helped me realize that I need to be more open, understanding, and caring about people with different biological genes. I love passages that tell a story, but have a meaning that really makes you think.…

Modern American Memoirs edited by Annie Dillard is a series of excerpt from different memoirs wrote by successful writers to tell the readers what was the life like in their childhood. Many of these writers have gone through different struggles to become that they are today. Furthermore, most of them have shared some common tropes in their childhood. One common trope that is shared between James Baldwin and Anne Moody is segregation. Due to the fact both of them are “colored” people, they suffered more than they deserved.…

Authors often write about their past experiences, whether traumatic and nightmarish or exciting and mostly normal. Writing can become therapeutic and be clarifying to authors because they get to show a side of themselves and pour out their emotions to an audience. In his memoir Night, Elie Wiesel tells his story about the experiences, exposure, and cruelty he endured during the Holocaust to divulge the theme of man’s inhumanity to man. At a time when most people should be enjoying becoming young adults, Wiesel’s journey took a horrific turn.…

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

Appreciating and Embracing our Unique Identities For me, I had always thought that literature was used as a scapegoat mechanism to escape reality, even if it was for a short period of time. Although I do not read as much before, I believe literary works allow us to analyze the deeper implicit meaning behind the ideas being presented by society. Before this course, I had failed to realize the impact to which a novel impacts the way I identify myself and appreciate my unique personality. This analysis helped me realize that not all forms of literature are true to reality. As a result, I believe that reading literature teaches us to appreciate and embrace our own identities to some extent.…

I'd never really read a autobiography, but the book is sort of like a behind the scenes that other books don't tell you. When I got the book my mom said, “You better start to read that book soon because Susan is 95 you know. ” At that point I had already started a series so I didn't get into it until a week after I received the book. The first night I read the book it was cold, I only had one lamp going in my room, as I started to really get into the book i was very impressed with Susan's fantastic use of vocabulary such as the three different languages she used and I was in awe.…

Reading Builds Empathy While reading the article, “ Nerd Alert: Reading is Good For Your Health,” published by Jen Christensen from CNN.com, I found that multiple studies conducted on the effects of reading showed an increase in empathy. Memoir, often distinguished from autobiography, is a narrative that reveals experiences within the author 's lifetime and is often written in the first person point of view. An excellent example of this would be Eugenia Ginzburg’s memoir, Journey into the Whirlwind. In her memoir, Eugenia Ginzburg describes her own imprisonment and exile by detailing her eighteen years in prison following her arrest during the Great Purge. Ginzburg writes her memoir in a way to drive home her themes. In other words, her end goal is to clearly state her themes and have the readers understand what the themes are by writing her memoir around them.…

Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…
