We’ve all heard the quotes about success: “Successful people don’t become that way overnight,” “your true success in life begins only when you make the commitment to become excellent at what you do,” “what separates the talented ones from the successful ones is a lot of hard work,” but which ones should we believe? There must be a happy medium; a universal definition for success. Grit, a novel written by Angela Duckworth, defines success as something we must obtain through a “never give up” attitude. She values motivation over a natural talent, because those with the motivation are more often successful compared to those with talents, who may not strive to improve on their innate abilities. You must fulfill your potential, or else it is a waste of talent and you will never be as successful as you could be.…

This culture is presented in an exemplary way through Bigger Thomas’ perspective of the world. He constantly reiterates the fact that ‘nobody will think a black man did it’(Wright), showing the formulation of the culture of poverty and growing up within that culture. Being withheld from certain amenities the reaction to wealthy people is commonly fear in these situations, yet an inferior emotion is commonly pitted within individuals. Allowing the continuance of the culture is allowing the world and individuals to continually devalue other humans for not having the same socio-economic stature as them, or in other words, not having the same opportunities as one another.…

For millions of people success is equated with material wealth, especially in our American culture. However, I believe success isn’t measured or defined by monetary wealth. I believe that at the end of a person’s life, true success should be measured by how many people they touched positively. People who go out and inspire others, in my opinion, are the people who are truly successful. Thus, I am excited to be entering a profession that doesn’t pay financially well, but the intrinsic reward can be great.…
