Have you ever read a book and seen that two people are the complete opposite of eachother? This is called a character foil, and this can easily be seen in Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespear. Much Ado About Nothing takes place in Messina, Italy, and is about Prince Don Pedro and his soldiers returning from war to Messina. When he arrives with his soldiers, a festival is thrown, which is when love and insanity ensue. However, Don John, Don Pedro’s evil brother, tries his best to ruin it all. In this way, Don Pedro and Don John are foils of each other because of their actions, different personalities, and their conflicting feelings.

In Scene 5 Act 1, when Don Pedro finds out that Hero wasn’t cheating on Claudio, and it was a trick after all, he asks Claudio “Runs not this speech like iron through your blood?” (Shakespear, 89) Don Pedro regrets what he did, and now feels horrible for slandering Hero. Going back to a previous point, when Don John finds out the plan for Don Pedro to woo Hero for Claudio, “If i can cross him any way, I bless myself every way.” (Shakespear, 15). When Don John says this, he means that if he can harm or hinder Don Pedro in anyway, he will feel much better about himself. This once again shows us how different Don Pedro and Don John are. Don Pedro feels terrible when he finds out he was tricked into slandering Hero, while Don John believes he will feel great if he can harm Don Pedro.

In all, Don Pedro and Don John are foils of each other because of their opposite actions, conflicting personalities, and their dissimilar feelings. Don Pedro has been shown to go to great lengths to help friends, stick up for said friends, and feel terrible when he finds out he hurt somebody based off lies. Don John, however, tries to hurt Don Pedro’s friends, would rather run away than protect his friends, and feels great when he hurts somebody. There are many more character foils in Much Ado About Nothing, some obvious, some take effort to find. So, keep an eye out for more foils, they’re
