Don Miguel Ruiz Four Agreements Summary

Decent Essays
In the book Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, there were four principles to live by. This included: 1) be impeccable with your words, 2) don’t take anything personally, 3) don’t make assumptions and 4) always do your best.

One of the major lessons that I derived from the book was to speak with integrity, to say only what you mean and not use your words as a tool to spread false rumours or gossips that can hurt others but instead use it to spread the truth and love.

Secondly I learned another interesting lesson it states that, from a young age we are trained by our parents, teachers, our leaders in religion to live by a set of rules, be it our first language, our first school or the first set of values our parents instil in us. As children we have no say over these rules. We are rewarded when we do good and punished when we break the norm or the rules. This subsequently leads to generations of adults who are afraid of rejection and unwilling to question and negotiate the rules of society. For example, if we miss a deadline date for an assignment we mentally and physically berate ourselves, and in order to change this mentality we must adopt a new set of agreements.

Another lesson learned from the novel is that we

We can do this by the following steps: 1) start noticing the beliefs that make us unhappy or afraid. For example we may believe in a certain value or norm but it makes you unhappy, so change it, learn a new agreement. 2) Learn to forgive those who have hurt you, as negative emotions can ruin your day. This allows you to move on instantly and free he parasitic emotions of hatred, anger and envy from the confines of your mind, and finally 3) remember the importance of each day. Each day contains 86400 seconds; each second lost will never be gotten back, so live each day how you decide, with new agreements to make yourself into the best version of

Personally the Treaty of Guadalupe greatly influences Gualinto as he proceeds further with his studies in school. By reading through the book, the reader can tell that Gualinto learns a lot in school about his Mexican heritage and how discriminative his class books can be on his ethnicity. Gualinto’s books describe Mexicans in a very disrespectful way that makes him have to justify himself in front of the class, to say that Mexicans are nothing like what the books compare him to. On the other hand, I do not feel the treaty really affects him because the treaty does not reach Texas, thus, it should have no effect in his life. However, there is a vast majority of Hispanic Heritage in Texas, and I feel that living in Southern Texas, Gualinto is…

Three books I have read for pleasure are The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and Flight by Sherman Alexie. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao made evident multiple things, one would have to be “that this world there’s somebody who will always love you” meaning no matter what you're going through as a minority get up and be successful because theirs always a person who will always love you. The Four Agreements made evident to me that one's life can drastically turn because of one's words, personality, and/or assumptions. As Ruiz provides us with examples of everyday wrongs and rights guiding the readers from what’s right and wrong. Flight helped me realize that one is able to control their…

In the memoir Year Of Impossible Goodbyes, Sookan changes from someone who is a child and very happy and becomes someone who is more adult like and safe. This change is seen in three moments: When she works at the sock factory and sees how horrible the Japanese are, when the family has to work closely with the Russians to escape, and when they cross the border into South Korea. When Sookan works at the sock factory, she realizes how hard the sock girls work. She also gets to take a deeper look into how the Japanese treat Koreans and gets a better idea of the world around her. "Sitting on the ground by the tree stump, we sorted, folded, and then packed into twelve or "tah", the pile of ugly green socks that Aunt Tiger put out for us in the morning" (Choi, 49).…

Introduction The three most important concepts I picked from chapters 3-4 are Courage, Wisdom, and Integrity. Three Concepts My first concept of courage, our book has many definitions of courage as well as categories but what I like how are book defines courage as being related to your heart, your mind and your thought. When you couple courage with a resilient leader, this displays someone who shows nothing but quality because a good leader will display courage and people who see leaders with good courage often will follow them and want to learn from encouraging people.…
