1. The letter was written by Don Juan de Onate. He was a Spanish-American explorer, colonizer & father that led a group from Zacatecas known then as New Spain know now as Mexico present day Santa Fe. He led his party of 600 persons buy wagon, described as moving a village some four miles long. He was a person who left his country in disgrace and was hoping to please his Lordship and Majesty with the riches that he could claim for them. He hoped to obtain the Cedula that he didn’t receive in April now due to his hard work of obtaining land and riches for the Majesty. He was exploring lands and riches to claim for his country so that they would prosper and he would be blessed by God and Majesty.

The importance of the subject of the document is without additional reinforcement further exploration would not have been possible. The relationship of the author to the action is with the extra support he could continue to expand further into the interior and stake Spanish claims to the land and enforce Spanish culture. Action begins in the area of the Rio del Norte which is where he locates the Apache, riches and learns of the pearls of the South Sea which he sees as being an asset for his home land. He established the Provience of Tequas which is where he is writing the letter from.

The author wrote this document to the King Phillip II to portray himself as a worthy leader in the name of Spain noting all that he had accomplished & to inform him of the riches of the land and how it will benefit the home country.
