Don Hellison's Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility: Through Physical Activity is a Teachers guide on how to incorporate his ideology into the classroom as well outside. Hellison preaches his idea of helping kids take what is learned through Physical Education and use it in everyday life. Hellison believes as a teacher we must show kids not just how to play basketball or get an A+ in a class but to take the skills and apply them to the world outside of the classroom. Don talks about the 5 levels of students and how they can progress through the different levels, 0 being the starting point level 5 being the end: Level one “Respecting the Rights & Feelings of Others” level one discusses how students need to realize they are apart of a …show more content…
Hellison explains in his book the use of talks/meetings, reflections, as well as a educator realizing students strengths and weaknesses. When Hellison touches on the idea of teaching TPSR he has something called the “Daily Program Format” this program consists of 5 parts, relational time, awareness talk, physical activity plan, group meeting, self-reflection time. The beginning step is the awareness talk this is an essential before you get into your actual lesson. In this talk you must address the true purpose and understanding of what the lesson is about prior to teaching. The activity plan is the actual activity of the lesson woven together with TPSR by empowering students to make decisions for themselves and be self directed throughout the learning. The group meeting is once again a chance to empower the students to express their opinions on the lesson and as an educator you use the students feedback for improvements in the future. Finally the self reflection is a chance for students to self assess themselves for that day on how personally and socially responsible they were. In my opinion the “Daily Program Format” is an excellent way of expressing TPSR, Hellison focuses on empowering students and by empowering students you give them ability to be self directed and make decisions in the class. I really like the idea of addressing not the sport the lesson will be …show more content…
I myself believe that one must lead through example, now right now I am aspiring to become a teacher but the journey for TPSR begins now. As an 18 year old male I am very empowered in my life to make my own decisions and I feel there is a lot of pressure on me to succeed on a personal level as well to set the way for younger family members. I personally believe that me pursuing a career through education and attending the university sets a huge example for my younger cousins, if they see someone they are super close to they will also feel the idea of pursuing a career at the university level is possible for them. As a role model you hold a lot of power, you are constantly being viewed and copied by eager minds. As a teacher you are the one person you gets to shape a student for 12 years of their life and in that short 12 years you must be able to grow them as people. I also mentioned how the journey to becoming a teacher who addresses TPSR begins now. Even though I am a ways away from getting my degree the idea of being a socially and personally responsible person early on will help me understand ways to incorporate the pedagogy into my teachings. TPSR is not a concept exclusively for Phys Ed it is a concept that needs to be preahced by all educators, TPSR turns students into people of our society and

During this semester I personally contributed to my overall success in the PTAP 2310 class by studying consistently and coming prepared to class. I found that having previously read the chapter and notes, I was able to further understand what Dr. Amite was teaching. This also proved to be beneficial if I had trouble understanding a portion of the chapter I could come with questions. I entered this class knowing that my performance and understanding of the information relied heavily on my entrance into the PTA program. Becoming a PTA is so important to me that it kept me driven to have a complete understanding of the material, even when it was most difficult.…

Rose D’Alessio: A Teacher Leader at Montevallo High To be a leader, a teacher must think as leaders do. Rather than asking , “What am I going to do?” leaders ask, “What is it I am trying to get others to do, and what reasons might they have for doing those things?” (Schlechty, 2002). This thinking model describes Montevallo High School’s October Teacher-of-the-Month, Rose D’Alessio.…

The next step in integrating culturally responsive teaching into my multicultural field experience was to build a cultural learning community. When teaching it’s important to set up a safe, open and honest environment. To do this I extended and received welcome as students entered the gym and I tried to be as present as much as possible. I also listened to the students when they were talking and built relationships with the students to try and make them feel included and important. Additionally, I paid attention to my facial expressions and body language.…

With gym class seeming pointless to many it leads many to want to skip it entirely. (cite) Which my schools and many others offer to students who are part of two school sport teams. These influenced students to think physical education was more for getting people to do physical activity and doesn’t show the why and how to build healthy fitness habits. Many students on the sports teams in school didn’t want to play games in class seeing how student participation wasn’t always guaranteed. This would be because my teacher wouldn’t motivate us to try our best and wouldn’t help us with our mistakes.…

Success in education can be measured every day in every school when the beliefs of the leader are reflected in the students and the staff. I aspire to be an innovative leader that motivates people to be courageous and open-minded to tackle the hard tasks. Furthermore, I hope to be a transformative leader that becomes a role-model to their peers by doing rather than saying. Whenever someone asks me what my major is, I get this euphoric feeling inside of me that cannot wait to explain to them that I get to be a teacher some day. I know that they will ask me why I want to be in school the rest of my life or how I will get by financially, but I will get to look them in the eyes and tell them my story on how it is so much more than that and why I am so in love with the idea of teaching. I strongly believe that teachers have the power to not only change the world, but to improve it. It starts with future educators like me. I want to inspire the youth.…

Reflection in action (Schön 1983) demands from teacher some more experience, in order to reflect and act simultaneously (Hatton and Smith, 1995). Whereas Gore and Zeichner (1991) believed that there is no right way of doing the reflection and that the best idea is to combine all of them and to create your own path of reflecting. They highlighted four major aspects of teaching. You will have to ask yourself and reflect on accurate questions about each aspect to evolve deeper understanding of actions taken during lessons in order to create a lesson that will be efficient for your learners. Those aspects are: academic reflection, that includes questions like ‘Do I know my content really well?’…

I mentioned earlier that my seventh grade English, to be specific, teacher influence myself to become a teacher. I realized how she taught her students and engaged them in learning, and ever since then I have took note to how all my teachers teach so I could prepare myself for my future. I always love helping my younger peers with their homework and playing the imaginary game “School” with my brothers and friends. I would declare myself as the teacher and make up imaginary lessons to teach, but lessons that would reflect what I was currently learning or what my pretend students were learning in their true classrooms at school.…
