“Diego de Vargas Zapata y Luján Ponce de León y Contreras (1643 in Spain – 1704), commonly known as Don Diego de Vargas, was a Spanish Governor of the New Spain territory of Santa Fe de Nuevo México, to the US states of New Mexico and Arizona.” Diego was promoted to justicia mayor of Tlalpujahua, mining area northwest of Mexico City, in what is now the Mexican state of Michoacán. During his time of the mayor, he increased royal receipts from the silver mines. Diego pledged, in his role for the governship, to restore the Rio Grande Pueblo world to Spanish dominion.
