The problem is that he is Hutu but, his wife and kids are Tutsi. Tutsi or not Paul takes control to save his family and make sure they are safe. As a hotel manager, Paul has spent years storing up favors and now he starts to use them. As a viewer I can tell Cheadle took his role very seriously in every line he said, to be honest there was times where I forgot that this was a movie. He moves the bribery up another level. Sooner or later, he tells a powerful general, who is accused of leading the chaos, and if Paul is not alive to testify for him, the general could be in deep trouble.
As a viewer of this film I felt as throughout the whole film I was gripping my seat and waiting for the next thing to happen. The writers Keir Pearson and Terry George (who happens to be the director as well) did and an excellent job writing this true story. It’s very difficult to write about a true story because you have to stay true to history and still not bore the audience. Since Terry George was the writer and director it was good to see what he wrote actually come to life in a magnificent way.
This movie is the definition of a “riveting drama”. "Hotel Rwanda" is not what I thought it was about, I thought it was going to be about a hotel and its very simple issues. This movie is about heroism and how it lives in anyone that tries hard enough and for that I give this heartwarming tale a 5/5
