Africans have great respect for human life. Abortion, killing and murder were forbidden. Armed robbery, kidnapping and terrorism were unknown to them. Families were not living in fear of insecurity. Anybody who violated the sacredness of human life was either forced into an exile or he became an outcast. Sharing and communal existence has been part of our culture values. Individualistic attitudes, selfishness, greed and self-centeredness were not found in our cultural heritage. Those who had lands provided farmlands and even residential places for their brothers, friends and neighbors. The community always carried everybody along and sought the welfare of all. During any celebration, families shared and exchanged their meals with different other families and provide sheds for visitors. The community leader stood out as a symbol of honesty, truthfulness, justice, peace and harmony within the community or else he was considered a terror. In most African communities the elders were highly honored; and tributes were often presented to them during certain festival, harvests and cultural celebrations. Parents were usually well-looked after by their children and grandchildren. Failure to look after one’s parents properly brought curses to the children. The old women and widows within the community were often helped by younger women and youths within the society. There was high sense of sanctity and purity. New brides were honored with gifts by their families and marital homes, if they were found to be virgins on their traditional wedding day. Rape and prostitution were highly forbidden. Incest was never mentioned among the youths of those days because they were considered abomination acts which could bring about repercussion on the entire community. Ernest S.O
