When Don Aker was a child he loved going to school because it was his only opportunity to see other kids. He also enjoyed reading and writing because they were things he could do on his own time when people his own age weren't around. The whole language instruction was new at the time and one the other teachers in the school talked to him about some of the things she was doing with her class. Don Aker had said, "it was a great opportunity to connect with a level of education that I might never have connected with at all." In 1987 Don had attended a teacher's conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia where Nancie Atwell was speaking. Don later wrote a piece of fan mail to Nancie asking for any suggestions to better his writing skills. He received a reply from her recommending to him the Martha's Vineyard Summer Workshop. Don took the opportunity, attended the workshop and started to write in 1988. Don has written over eighteen books and short stories since then.
After sixteen years of teaching high school level language arts, a math position opened up and Don Aker took it. He is also still writing and he chooses to write about things that bother him and don't go away such as domestic violence, youth crime, peer pressure, bullying,and many other teen problems. Don Aker is a father of two daughters and lives with his wife in Nova Scotia,
