Hypothesis: Domestic workers are being mistreated and their rights are being violated as the government is not helping their cause
Aim: to determine how domestic workers are being treated and if their rights are being violated. I determined how domestic workers are being treated during post apartheid in comparison to how they were treated pre apartheid and during Apartheid and determined if unfair treatment is still carrying on. This was done by looking at the rights of the domestic workers and looking at interviews to determine if the rights are being violated. I want to determine if the government is in fact doing anything to help the domestic workers

This act protects the right of the domestic worker which include the following, domestic workers should work no more than 45 hours a week, and should not work more than nine hours a day if they work a five-day week, or more than eight hours a day if they work for more than five days a week. Compensation For Occupational Injuries And Diseases Act. Workers who are affected by occupational injuries and diseases are entitled to compensation. This law protects the domestic worker as it is the domestic workers right for sick leave as they may take up to six weeks of sick leave a year while still getting paid. Even if you get seriously injured, you still should be getting paid until you have recovered.(source 5)(source 8)
Employment Equity Act. This act protects workers from any discrimination that takes place in the workplace. It’s your right to be treated as equally as everyone else. If any racism occurs, this law is put in place to protect the domestic workers(source 5)(source 8)

In comparison to Lebanon, South Africa are doing better regarding treatment of domestic workers. I do believe that South Africa can use this as a warning signal. I think our government should be more careful by sticking to the labour laws, making people aware of their rights to make sure that this isn’t occurring in our country or to prevent it from happening in our country. If our government are not strict on the laws people will take advantage and carry on undervaluing workers. I think the government are heading down this path if they carry on being lenient on labour
