They are often times abused by their partners whether it be a husband or boyfriend. The major types of abuse against women include sexual, physical, and psychological abuse. It is proven that at some point in their lives, 1 in 3 women have been victims of some sort of physical violence by an intimate partner and 1 in 5 women have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner. In the United States alone, 1 in 5 women have been raped and shockingly, 46.7% of these rapes are by an acquaintance (“Statistics”). In 2013, roughly 35% of women in some regions of the world suffered from violence from their partner (Nonnel 1). There are various factors that can act as catalysts towards actions that categorize as domestic violence. Beginning with infants and toddlers, their experiences can cause them to mimic aggression while they play with other children. Also, loud noises and visual images that can be associated with their personal experiences can cause them severe distress. Children that are in preschool often show unhealthy ways of expressing their anger. They get confused because what they see can conflict what they hear from other people. They learn gender roles associated with violence and victimization and are usually more independent. Kids ages 6-11 are old enough to be aware of the situation they are in which may lead them to have concerns such as the safety of their mother or about the possibility of their father being charged. They are easily distracted so it is often harder for them to learn. They ignore the positive comments on things and only focus on the negatives. These children also tend to make associations regarding gender and abuse such as the idea that males are always the abusers and females are always the victims (Baker 8).
