Introduction The sexual violence panel I went to was interesting. On campus I have seen the Take a Stand flyers on buildings, before even listing to the guest speakers. The campaign’s mission is to educate people on sexual and domestic violence. The efforts to provide resources to any, and all victims. Having a support group in an event like this one is key to recovery. For this panel discussion the three panelist talked about ways to help the victim. The resources given to victims, and survivors after a sexual assault. The coping mechanisms one should carry with them, after the ordeal. The panelist went into detail how affected is the victim after being raped. The road to recover one has to go through, after the horrendous act of sexual victimization.
Rebuilding the Victim The panelist explain after an assault happens the victim feels vulnerable. Their inner power, and will has been taken away. They said when they first speak with the victim, they help them gain control. When engaging

The victim needs reassuring it is not their fault. They feel guilty as to what happen, and think they deserve being sexual victimized. The panelist told us a story about a 65 year old man she spoke with who was raped. The older man said it happened when he was 14 years old. He wanted some pot, and an older news caster said he had some. So at the time the 14 year old boy went into the news caster house. There the news caster raped him, and to this day he never said a word about what happened to him. He tried justifying the incident to the panelist by saying it was his fault. He should not have been trying to get high. Going to an adult’s house was wrong, and he should have been punished. The lady many times tried to explain to him it was not his fault. In no way should he ever have been raped does not matter what the reason may be. Disclosing what happened to you earlier on in the victimization can help

Depression, guilt, shame, fear, anxiety and interpersonal difficulties have been found to be present in survivors beyond one year after the rape (Cohen & Roth, 1987; Resick, 1983). However, crisis theory models are limited because they compartmentalize the aftermath of rape into phases and the actual experience of being raped can be lost (Fischer,…

Although Intimate partner violence has been around for the longest time ever, it has recently been recognized as a social issue (Alvarez & Bachman, 2014, p. 110). The main issue with the Criminal Justice System and Intimate partner violence relies on the fact that the issue was always viewed as a private matter until lately (Alvarez & Bachman, 2014, p. 110), which may be the reason for so many flaws in the Criminal Justice System when it comes to Intimate partner violence. Police can improve their response by treating the situation as a serious criminal matter. Sometimes officers do not think the situation is a bad as it is, which often result in life threatening situations. Police Departments should also offer training on intimate partner abuse for officers so they will be able to identify red flags, and also know how to properly deal with a situation pertaining to intimate partner abuse.…

I am studying psychology, and I know many of the causes and statistics behind why people kill or assault. I know that many attackers lack empathy for their victims, and I still do not truly understand how one human being can be so cruel to another. Every time I listen to victims of any abuse or violence, I just do not understand where their abuser did not see their humanity, especially in someone they know. Hearing about how many people do not speak up, makes me wonder how many women and men are dealing with the trauma of sexual violence alone. I already know people that are close to me who have been through some type of ordeal.…
