Women represent 50 % of the world’s population, yet why is that we underrepresent them everyday? Why do we fail to respect them everyday? There are two words which are degrading our society everyday: domestic violence. Domestic violence is not only a prevalent issue around the globe but also a very severe issue amongst married women in the neighborhood of Englewood in the south side of Chicago. Chicago Tribune states that “Englewood ranks 7th among Chicago's 77 community areas for violent crime reports” in the past 10 years (Chicago Tribune). Marriages are considered very holy. However, an article called Chicago’s Divorce Article shows that 1 out of 3 marriages end up getting a divorce due to domestic violence (Chicago’s Divorce Statistics). Scientifically, with marriage, comes the burden of raising children. But domestic violence is ending marriages drastically especially in United States of America. It is far stretched but imagine if there is no reproduction then there will not be any descendants and no evolution for the world to progress. Even if a child is born, he/she needs the love of both the parents to have a healthy childhood. An abusive relationship is not only detrimental to the victim but also toxic for the children who are spectating and learning from the influence of their parents. It poses the greatest threat to social justice in Chicago due to its prevalence in Englewood. If this continues then people will not trust marriages as much anymore, children will have a bitter idea of the women population and it violates the fundamental human rights conduct. It is very easy to understand that this is a huge social issue but it cannot be combatted if we do not tackle the underlying root causes; the enforcement of inferiority of women in the media, common male perception of males being superior to women and different cultures having different conventions of interactions of men. Domestic violence has been taboo for several years but now people are more open about it which is a positive result but does not necessarily mean that it is not prevalent anymore; especially in Chicago. Domestic violence in a house can deter the mental growth of the women and the children living in the house which can stamp permanent trauma in their lives. Therefore, it is very detrimental and it is an social that needs to be tackled and settled as soon as possible. Men can not use societal expectations as an excuse to be violent with their wives anymore. Chicago Tribune states that “the education rate is increased by 20 %” in the past 10 years (Chicago Tribune). However, domestic violence is still a big issue.
