The topic that I will be discussing today will be abuse in the home, specifically spousal abuse. I chose this topic because recently, it has emotionally impacted me because of the tragic event that occurred at North Park Elementary in San Bernardino, California. Tragically, a Teacher's husband went into her classroom and murdered her with a gun. Afterward, it was stated that he had previous domestic violence charges and that there was evidence that this was another domestic violence incident. This incident emotionally impacted me because it happened in my hometown and not too far from my house. Even though I am aware that spousal abuse exists, I was in complete shock that it would escalate to the point that it would happen in front of an entire classroom. It seems that even though domestic violence is taken more serious now than it was decades ago, it still is a major problem. …show more content…

(CFD 437) In the North Park incident, it seemed as if Karen Smith, the teacher who was killed, did not report the abuse she endured. I say this because the office did let her estranged husband through. I believe if she would have spoken about it, they would not have let him through. Even though I do not believe it is her fault for not reporting it, I believe more incidents can be prevented if the abused spoke out. Sadly, it is not that easy, and that is what impacts me emotionally. Often times, the abused fear they will get into trouble for speaking out, will not be believed, or worse, be killed. I feel Karen felt she would not be safe if she spoke out, so she did not. Additionally, it was stated by her that once she married her husband, his personality

Research about the factors that maintain situations of abuse has generally focused separately on the coping strategies of women, barriers to leaving the relationship and the perpetrators' means of abuse. Using grounded theory we generated four themes: Commonalities and contradictions in the experience of abuse; living with abuse; the response of systems reinforced or challenged the abuse and dealing with abuse beyond the relationship. These findings illustrate how situations of domestic abuse can be prolonged by limited options available to victims for support and protection, and a lack of active public acknowledgement that domestic abuse is unacceptable. The women, who were murdered by their husbands, ex-husband, or suitor, were presumably facing some kind of abuse while in a relationship with their partner. Violence towards women will continue if the women do not report the abuse. Reporting the abuse would cause the abuser to become vengeful towards the victim.…
