Black and Blue Sari (2009), by Kamal Dhillon, is about a true story of a young girl’s journey of overcoming her abusive husband. As a single mother of four children, the author felt that it was her mission to spread awareness about domestic violence because she too has been through a rough past dealing with an abusive husband, 11 years to be exact. Using her platform as a way to help others in the same situation as she was, she expressed her years of torture and rape from her husband in hopes that it would assist and reassure those that life will eventually get better in the end.
In the book, it follows a girl, named Kamal, on her journey of overcoming her years of relentless abuse from her husband. She was originally from India but moved to Richmond, British Columbia to complete the arranged marriage with her new husband. She learns to take in her husband’s verbal and physical assaults while taking care of her three children with very minimal support from everyone else. As culture being a big factor in her years of abuse, Kamal was struct with limited options when she wanted to go find help. Despite the amazing details and stories that Kamal had gone through, one major downfall of this book was how it was quite repetitive. Repetitiveness was something I should have expected since this book revolves around a girl overcoming abuse from her husband but it just became like the same concept for most chapters. For example, I would read how she committed a wrong action which caused Raj to flip out ending in a lot of gruesome punches and kicks to her. I think because I didn’t have enough time to read the whole book, I didn’t fully enjoy and appreciate what actions she, unfortunately, had to
