I think a domestic violence history should definitely be a factor in child custody and visitation. My main reason for feeling this way is not to punish the parent or guardian, but solely for the safety of the child. According to this week’s lecture, the risk of children being abused is higher in a domestic violence home. Also 30 to 60 % of domestic violence abusers also abuse children. (Black, 2015, Slide 17) I also think a domestic violence history should be a factor in child custody and visitation because the right measures and precautions needs to be set in place. For example, some aggressors may need to have supervised visits with their children, due to the unpredictability of the behavior. A domestic violence history should be a factor in child custody and visitation because if a child has seen their guardian in the past, changes are the child will eventually witness it again. Lastly, a domestic violence history should be a factor in child custody and visitation to ensure that the right decisions are being made for the children. Also the child is always impacted by the situation the most. The piece of artwork that impacted me the most would have to be the drawing of the earthquake. It made me sort of sad that the child put him or herself in the middle and made the parents the two pieces of the earthquake. What I understood from this drawing is the child is always stuck in the middle of all of the chaos. I also saw this drawing as the child expressing that when the parents fight it is similar to an earthquake.
