Dominance occurs when the abusers feels the need to have power over their victim. In order to achieve complete dominance over their victim, abusers take control of everything including the decision making. The abusers expect their victims to obey everything they demand without questioning their requests. When the victims do begin to question them is when the abuser lashes out on them with violence. Perpetrators of domestic abuse tend to humiliate their victims to erode their self-esteem. When a victim feels defective, they are less likely to leave the relationship in fear that no one else will love them. Abusers attempt to make their victims feel that they are worthless and no one else would ever want them if they were to attempt to leave. Abusers also tend to isolate their partners in order to make them dependent on them. This typically means that the victims do not communicate with the outside world unless given permission. Victims usually are not allowed to have friends and must have permission to leave the house. If the victims of abuse do not allow for the dominance, humiliation, and isolation, it leads to threats. Abusers use threats to make their partners fear them and fear leaving. Threats include harming the victim, children, and even pets.
