Tsavoussis, Stawicki, & Papadimos (2015) supports that a child that has witnessed domestic violence have a high likelihood to have changes in the development of their brains, anatomically and physiological, which leads to the child having difficulty responding to social situations appropriately and also the ability to work through minor challenges they face within their lifetime. They suggested that children who witnessed domestic violence have neurobiological changes which include abnormalities in the midbrain, the limbic system, cortex, corpus callosum, and cerebellum. This causes difficulty encompassing behavioral, social and emotional difficulties, cognitive and attitudinal problems, adjustments, and other long-term difficulties (Tsavoussis, …show more content…
When it is established that the child is safe, the parent’s treatment should be focused on how they can better the child’s sense of security and how they can have an empathic connection with them. The assessment should also identify red flags that indicate that the parent needs more intensive work to address these issues, in order for the child to receive specific work this must be done first. School settings mental health practitioners can address concerns that can hinder development through group counseling interventions including both structured activities and play therapy. All students have access to the schools mental health resources such as school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers.     My initial reaction after reading Bruce Perry’s article on the neurodevelopmental impact of violence in childhood was understanding. Having a neurobiological explanations for the consequences of trauma helped me understand the long lasting and damaging effects.
