My sign’s purpose was to make advocate or spread awareness about domestic violence. I know many people including my friends and family who are victims or abusers of domestic violence, but I always took it lightly and didn’t speak up about what was happening. But ever since I started this project about domestic violence and became more educated on domestic violence, it really transformed my opinion on domestic violence. Before researching and finding more information about domestic violence, I didn’t really care to speak up about domestic violence; but after reading victims’ stories on domestic violence and really diving deep into how dangerous and heartbreaking domestic violence is, I started to believe that domestic violence is never right …show more content…
The EVE or End Violence Everywhere website is a website dedicated to creating a future without domestic violence. This website relates to my sign because it’s providing reasons why domestic violence is wrong. For example, when defining domestic violence, the website says "This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone”. I don’t think it’s ever right to do those things in a relationship, like how is it right to feel frightened or terrorized in a relationship. Instead, a relationship should include things like comfort and delight. Another resource I used is the University of Michigan website page about Domestic violence (http://stopabuse.umich.edu/about/understanding.html). The website talks about domestic violence and why is it such an issue here in the United States. For example, the website says “It is a primary cause of injury to women in the United States. According to the National Institute of Justice, over one third (37%) of women admitted to an emergency room for violence-related injuries were abused by an intimate partner”. Domestic violence is the primary cause of injury and the its rate is way too high. Violence another person especially women shouldn’t exist, let alone that common. Violence is never right and justified. The last source I used was the Domestic Abuse Hotline website …show more content…
I got to advocate my message about domestic violence not being right. I got a few nods from the people waiting at the traffic light when I made eye contact with them. To me, this meant people read my sign and that I managed to get my message across to people. So, this sign waving event was a success in my eyes. However, what happened during the day when carrying the sign to all my classes was what reinforced the idea that I made an impact. For example, when I went to my period 6, I was the first to arrive to class and I asked Ms. Maeda if I could leave my sign on the side of the room. She said yes, and strategically, I placed my sign facing the entrance of the room. Coincidentally, we’re only allowed to enter through that one door, so everyone had to look at the sign when entering the room. The one instance that stood out was when this girl looked at the board, and asked Ms. Maeda what the board was about. I answered for Ms. Maeda, and told her that it was my board. Then, I explained the message of my board, and why I had to do a sign waving event in October, the month for domestic violence awareness. The bell didn’t ring yet, and while I was explaining to the girl what the board was, I noticed my other classmates were listening and paying close attention to what I was saying. Another girl said “Good Job” to me, and I could tell from her tone that she was being sincere and that she was actually touched by my board. This incident proved to me
