Domestic violence, such as sexual assault and rape are serious social and public health issues in the United States. According to the National Violence against Women Survey (NVAWAS), one in six women and one in thirty-three men have been a victim of attempted or completed sexual assault. While every two and a half minutes someone is sexually assaulted, which in then leaves a total of 293,066 victims each year. From these statistics alone, domestic violence is a well-known problem, however the real problem is how normalized society has made this issue. First domestic violence is known as an aggressive behavior toward a significant other. This can include any type of harassment such as stalking an individual to physical abuse and sexual assault. In today’s society we can all see some type of domestic violence in our everyday life from multiple television shows, movies and social media. For example, I know I can watch countless hours of Special Victims Units (SPVU), and watch horrific acts of violence portrayed on women and men, however I do not consider the crimes performed out the ordinary. Or in other words I believe in these stories, such as they are common acts in life. Another example where we can easily have access to domestic violence is on social media, such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
