Domestic violence occurs when a partner or family member attempts to psychologically or physically dominates another person. It often seal with violence between spouses, or spousal abuse and it also includes non-married intimate couples. It takes place in all types of cultures including any religions, ethnicities, classes, and sexes. It can also be perpetrated by a man or woman.
Domestic Violence is defined as, “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.” (U.S Department of Justice, 2016, p# 1) It also includes behaviors that manipulate, isolate, terrorize, blame, injure, humiliate, or wound someone. Domestic violence exists when someone tries to physical restrain someone, sexually assault someone, cause bodily injury, or causing a death. Domestic Violence also involves five different forms of abuse including physical, sexual, emotional, economic, and psychological.
The primary objectives when law enforcement respond to a domestic violence call is to de-escalate the violent situation in order to have a safe scene, avoid any officer injuries, reduce any future calls from the same scene, enforce all laws against the perpetrator, and to facilitate prosecution where necessary.
