What is the link between domestic violence and child abuse?
A growing body of research suggests that spouse abuse and child abuse are linked. Research on domestic violence reveals a range from 45% to 70% of battered women in shelters reporting the presence of child abuse. “In some child assault cases, children are not the primary targets. Father's violence against children occurs either from thwarted intervention attempts or from blows directed at the wife that accidently strike nearby children.” Battered women often give their abusers full time attention in an effort to control the level of violence they are receiving. Or they respond by withdrawing from the family including the children in an effort to protect themselves.

Until recently neither domestic violence or child abuse has been recognized as a substantial thing present in both domestic violence and child abuse cases. They need to develop more effective screening mechanisms for each of these problems. Intervention strategies need to be taken in account for the safety of both women and children. Treatment plans need to focus more on the protection and advocacy of this topic.
Future research should explicate the links between domestic violence and child abuse. Like what conditions create both problems within the same family? What measures can be developed for screening both domestic and child abuse? What factors have to be considered when assessing whether a mother has the capacity to care for her children outside a violent relationship when a child abuse investigation is taking place while she is still being
