Domestic Violence Effects On Children

Domestic violence can occur between two people in an intimate relationship. It is a serious and pernicious problem around the world that ruins lives, breaks up families, and makes a lasting impact on the victim. Victims of domestic violence are more likely to experience repeating victimisation than victims of any other types of crime. Additionally, domestic abuse shows no preference. If one partner feels angry or upset, no matter their sexual orientation, eventually the feelings will come out towards their partner in a violent way. There is an erroneous belief that domestic violence mainly affects low income families because of the poverty stricken areas the families are living in, but this is untrue. In the article, “Children often witness Domestic Violence, with Side Effects”, written by Dr. Rick Naeurt, claims that “parents are such big factors in child’s life. If the child is endangered, that can threaten a child’s well-being” which can cause many psychological, emotional, and physical effects such as “depression, anxiety, nightmares, and disruption with school work” ( ). Not all children exposed to violence are affected equally or in the same way. However, for many children, having exposure to domestic violence may be traumatic, and their reactions are similar to children 's reactions to other traumatic situations. Popular media sources also cover this issue, such as “Domestic Violence - How It Affects Children”, formulated by WebMD stating men who abuse their wives also often hurt the children as well claiming that “30% - 60%” of children are involved in the abuse. Additionally, this article asserts that children who see one partner hurting or threatening the other have a higher chance of being in an abusive relationship themselves either as a victim, or abuser. Another agency called NCSTN, or The National Child Traumatic Stress Center Network also says “children exposed to domestic violence may learn that it is acceptable to exert control or relieve stress by using violence or that violence is linked expressions of intimacy and affection”.
