Domestic Case Interview

It is imperative to speak with professionals in the criminal justice department as it is one of the avenues of learning. Learning is not always from books, but sometimes from observation and even questionings. For this purpose an interview was conducted between myself and an attorney who deals with domestic violence. Although it is a difficult subject, listening to them speak allowed me to realize another importance. That was being present in a courtroom to help filter any other information that would have been missed. The interview was about a domestic case and the following information will be discussed in future paragraphs. Madden, the legal form for the court hearing would mention “State of ___ v. ____” (Ms. Madden 2017). That would be the name of the state in which the problem occurred whether it is Maryland, Georgia etc. If it is Virginia it would state “Commonwealth of Virginia v. Name of the criminal, abuser etc.” (Ms. Madden 2017). Beneath it gave a docket number followed by the time, file number and reference number. This is to help organize and track all materials produced for courts in America. It is located at the top left hand side. The annual number has risen in the past few years, yet less than a half are actually reported so less than a half make it into the courts. Most states provide a violence and sexual assault hotline with a toll free number in which the victim can call. It was revealed that there is also another type of order called the emergency protection order also known as EPO. According to one source “An EPO is a short-term protection order typically given to a victim by the police or magistrate when his or her abuser is arrested for domestic violence.” (FindLaw 2017, p. 1) These are not the same as they only last from one to ten

    During orientation I was able to understand more of what the Cobb County Victim Witness Unit does. I was not surprised about the lengthy steps that were involved in the criminal trial process, however to be able to hear true life scenarios from my supervisor made it more real and very appealing to me.
