The Effects domestic abuse have on women
Domestic violence was an issue I grew up around as a child, I was raised by my grandparents were there was both physical and verbal abuse amongst the two. I took interest in this topic because of that, I decided to do further research to get psychological knowledge on the effects domestic violence has on people. In order to know the effects of domestic violence you must first know what domestic violence, what is domestic violence? The national coalition against domestic violence defines domestic violence as “the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against

When it comes to domestic violence, bruises are visible and invisible on a person. Being physically or emotionally abused by a person you call your other half can have an effect on your physical and mental well-being. In the article “Association between depression and abuse by partners of women attending general practice: descriptive, cross sectional survey” according to Kelsey Hegarty, Jane Gunn, Patty Chondros, and Rhonda Small “Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are strongly associated with depression in women” (Hegarty et al.,621). Abuse can trigger clinical depression, “a serious mental health disorder such as depression”. According to Hegarty et.al women who has a history of violence from a partner compared to women who has not been abused just under half of the abused women had clinical depression (Hegarty et al., 621-622). In the article the authors talks about the study done to “ explore the association of between depression and physical , emotional, and sexual abuse by partners or ex-partners”(Hegarty et al.,621) the results of the study shows that 543 of 1227 women reported ever experiencing depression lasted more than two weeks (Hegarty et al., 622-623). With depressions comes symptoms according to safe place Olympia symptoms can include “prolonged sadness, feelings of hopelessness, unexplained crying, and changes in appetite with significant weight loss or gain, loss of energy or loss of interest and pleasure in activities previously enjoyed”. Depression can affect a person’s way of looking at the world, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness, fearful, and less than.
