Dom Cosmurro Irony

The novel Dom Cosmurro is centered around Bento’s (narrator) belief on the betrayal from his wife. Bento was a jealous man since the very beginning, and his jealousy may have drawn him into believing that his best friend and his wife had an affair. However, it was never really confirmed that his wife Capitu had an affair with his best friend Escobar. Throughout the novel, it was typical for Bento to compare his situation to others who suffered betrayal and/or a form of humiliation. Furthermore, out of this affair, as Bento proposed, came a child by the name of Ezequiel. Later, Escobar passes away, and Bento is asked to write a eulogy. In that situation, Bento felt uneasy because he was commemorating and honoring his enemy. Bento’s accusation …show more content…
The author, being the writer, mentions Camoes a poet, who accordingly claimed that there were not enough poets because of ungrateful audience. However, in Dom Cosmurro, it is stated that Camoes is wrong, that it is not because of the lack of a good audience, it is because people who are not more opened about their feelings, and would rather hide (be unknown) and silent. This seems to intend a form of hidden context on the authors behalf, stating that there were still great writers at the time. In addition, they did not need to use verse in order to capture a narration, and that it could be done without the use of poet composition. The lack of poets like Homer, lacked because of ambiguous and soundless people during that point of time. It is possible that Machado de Assis (author) felt this way because he was a great writer himself, and his novel Dom Casmurro wasn’t written of an event or point in time like the writings by Homer, but was based on a fiction novel that still brought and captured emotions for its modern work. Furthermore, Bento (the narrator), jumps to the conclusion that his wife was having an affair with his friend who had just passed, and who he honored through words he did not mean. He sought his fate to be like that of the Priams who lived as if nothing had happened, as if no damage or harm had been to them. Bento mentioned that if there were ever any tears on behalf of the Priams, they were kept hidden because it was better to live in content than in mourn. “The tears, if they shed them, are wiped away behind the door so that their faces may appear bright and clean,” there seemed to be ambiguity in this part of the passage because it was obviously to the situation of the Priams, but it seemed that he was also directing it to Capitu and her ability to

Homer and Sappho contend that the best way to cope with grief is to transform that emotion into rage towards the entity that has wronged them because the actions spurred by anger helps an individual gain what they want most. Both authors agree that regardless of the form of love an individual feels, the stages of grief that they cycle through are clear: initially, individuals experience the sting of grief and attempt to protect themselves against its harsh effects by shunning reality, once their pseudo reality is shattered, their grief transforms into anger towards the entity that has wronged them. It is because of this quote that Cleófilas allowed her husband to abuse her without fighting back. She believed that, in order to have a love as passionate as Lucia Mendez on the telenovela, accepting pain and hardships was necessary. In the end, Cleófilas reached power and bliss.…

I plan to further explain the significance of Lucio’s previous statement by exploring how different women either conform or do not confirm to the three aforementioned constructed categories. Showing how women fall into these categories is central to my argument because it enforces the idea that women throughout the play are being marginalized.…
