For centuries, animals have been at the side of people to help us, so what’s so wrong with that now? Most people think that the Navy using dolphins and sea lions to do jobs such as hunting mines and guarding GOP yachts. They should, however, be used for these jobs because they are more capable than humans, have safer jobs than humans, and have lots of training beforehand. The government didn’t just randomly pick dolphins and sea lions; they chose them because of their abilities. Dolphins have a biological sonar, a sense that allows them to use sounds to detect things around them. This can be used to detect the mines underwater. The manager of the marine mammals program, Mike Rothe, states “They’ve evolved over thousands of years to have a remarkable sonar. We’ve been developing UUVs for several decades.” Meanwhile, the sea lions are trained to use their enhanced underwater hearing and vision to detect unwanted swimmers in the area. They will attach a plate to the enemy and then take the attached tether to the handler. This makes it so that the dolphins can safely swim around and do their job, which brings us to the next point. …show more content…
The dolphins job is to detect a mine, place a small marker nearby, and then find another. The Navy diver will then find that marker and deal with the mine. The dolphins are protected from unwanted guests and from exploding mines. The sea lions will take care of the enemy divers and the mines are set not to go off if a fish, or dolphin, swim by. Also, in the movie “The Day of the Dolphin,” extremists tried to use the dolphins to blow up the president’s yacht. The Navy and government said that the dolphins are not weapons and are not trained to carry explosives. This made it clear to us that the government had no intention to danger the
