Dolly the sheep, born in 1996, was the first mammal have been successfully cloned from an adult cell. However, she died of a progressive lung disease more common in older sheep at a young age. She lived six and a half years while most sheep can live to 11 or 12 years of age. Through the post mortem, it is discovered that Dolly had telomeres that are shorter than others of the same age in the same species. Telomeres are pieces of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that shorten every time the cell divides. They could be used to determine a measure of ageing in cells. Dolly and many other cloned mammals came later have shown shortened telomeres, which reveals that their body were older than they actually age.
