Dollar Tree Domestic Growth: Case Summary

1.From the article in our reading this week there is no doubt that Dollar Tree domestic growth has taken on the strategies of the “Prospector” and “Analyzers” approach from the Miles’ and Snow strategy typology model. That said, evidence show that Dollar Tree used the prospector approach aggressively by buying out the competition. From 1995 to 2006 Dollar Tree acquired stores in the same industry throughout North America from New York to California (Parnell, 2014). Each acquisition caused the firm to reevaluate and add new operational and organizational systems redefining the $1.00 retail industry. Also, as an analyzer dealing in retail the firm used the Miles and Snow approach collectively together since both the analyzer and defending approach work well parallel with each other. In the discount retail industry two major competitors would be Target and Walmart as far as number of stores and volume. Walmart would be the largest in competition as far as a market that works as both a defender and prospector. This is because Walmart has a huge product line that can change quickly and adapt to any external changes with little or no effort, plus it does not affect their cost value as much as it would someone smaller than their organization. Target somewhat of a specialty discount store is also a prospector with fluidity to adapt quickly but not as fast as Walmart is some cases. In retrospect to Dollar Tree, their corporation would be a defender in comparison to Target and Walmart and not a prospector because Dollar Tree can only try to focus on a particular fixed group of buyers who are price conscious $1.00 customers. The competitors in this case have the advantage over Dollar Tree but one should not show a concern for Dollar Tree because their organization have achieved operational excellence in the low price industry and has made it difficult for others to gain entry into this market because of the Dollar Tree
