Dollar Tree is a single price variety store that now operates more than 14,000 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces (Thomas, 2015). Most all of the products offered by Dollar Tree are priced at $1.00 or less and the company offers products that meet a wide variety of consumers every day needs. According to Parnell (2014), Dollar Tree customers are typically price-conscious consumers who are looking to get the best price available and feel that prices at other chain stores are excessive compared to those of Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree is able to offer its products below chains such as Wal-Mart, Target and others with economies of scale much larger because they sell products that are not commercialized. The products that are offered in stores such as Dollar Tree are able to be sold for a dollar because …show more content…
To distinguish itself in the industry, Dollar Tree will need to continue its quest to offer low priced products that meet the everyday need of thrifty consumers. Food items have been a good seller for the company because they offer food items, some of them name brand, in smaller quantities for a dollar. This is a draw for the consumer who doesn’t need, want or can’t afford the larger quantity or price point. The fact that the company now accepts manufacturer coupons will also serve as a draw to the consumer who is looking for products at the best available price. The fact that Dollar Tree has acquired Family Dollar chain of stores will give the company greater economies of scale. They will be able to capitalize on savings because of their ability to combine sourcing and procurement activities, reduce corporate overhead, and optimize product distribution and its logistics networks. They will be able to continue offering a quality product for a single price point and will have a greater profit margin because they will be able to obtain their products cheaper and be able to deliver more

One of the most interesting techniques Food Lion has tried is price matching with other grocery chain stores. Just as the book Managerial and Decision Economics explains, Price matching is when a retail stores is in competition with other retail stores and tries to have the lowest possible price without losing any money. Food Lion has been a price matching retail store in almost all the time it has been open. In the end, the customers go to the retail store they like most since almost all retail stores are now participating in the competition that is price matching (Hess, 1991). Price matching works on big retail stores like Walmart that has done an explicit job at keeping their reputation clean but no matter how low the prices get at store with Food Lion’s reputation the customers will always go the store they know to be the best in everything.…

After shuttering its catalog business and spending the last few years focused on driving sales via a multitude of promotions, sales, and featuring exclusive brands, longtime retail giant JC Penney has lost its competitive advantage and is in desperate need of transformation (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). Despite having 590 separate sales last year Penney’s was unable to drive sufficient sales traffic in their stores or over the internet (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). As a result, Penney’s same store year over year sales increased a meager 0.7%, whereas competitors like Macy’s achieved 5.4% growth during the same period (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). Moreover, Penney’s was forced to sell approximately 75% of its merchandise at a discount of 50% or…

To capture this data, we decided to question current Costco customers using a quick survey which asked questions related to the products offered and their overall Costco experience. The conclusions that we were able to make were that customers usually go once or twice a month and are almost always pleased with their Costco experience due to the low prices, high quality products and effective amount of variety offered. Small Family Grocers

In addition to the strategy of focusing on nearby clientele, an understanding of different types of shopping trips can also help small family grocers to simplify price decisions. To compete with large retailers, many store owners have been found to adopt a low-price strategy to attract consumers (Mutebi and Ansari, 2008). Although lowering prices is an apparently attractive strategy, small family grocers typically lack access to the economies of scale, such as the significant volume discounts available to chain retailers (Hamilton, 2003). This suggests that the low-price strategy is inappropriate for small family grocers (Hamilton, 2003), and in fact, consumers usually expect to pay a higher price when they are making a shopping trip to satisfy…

So far, this project has shown that the shelf availability has increased by 5.7% to 93%. The Multi Channel Strategy now allocates a broader selection of products that are exclusively on Wal-Mart’s online store, to then promote online shopping, reacting to the booming online shopping market, like Amazon.com. These strategies are new, so it is hard to see the outcome, but so far it seems like these implementations have made a good impact on the company. Wal-Mart differentiated itself from the startup by using EDLP, and should continue to use this pricing strategy. Wal-Mart stores are known for its low prices, and redefining the company by changing the prices and qualities of its products (like implementing a hi-lo pricing strategy) would be a long and difficult thing to do, and a majority of customers would not be happy with the change.…
