All organizations look for a competitive advantage over their competition. With the onset of globalization and the increase of competition in the marketplace, organizations are looking to set themselves apart. Dollar stores are a prime example of setting themselves apart and creating a niche. Dollar stores, although small in size have been hot over the last ten years and many feel they will continue to be hot over the next several years.
Selling the basics such as paper products, food and other home necessities is what dollar stores are known for. Here in Michigan Dollar General has opened stores in some questionable rural areas such as Le Roy, Michigan, (population 256) and Lake George, Michigan (population 65). A district manager from norther central Michigan, (Who wished not to be named), told me the reason for this was zip codes. When a customer makes a purchase a short survey is answered at the end of the purchase and one of those questions asked is the customers current area of residence.
