Hawaii has a one-of-a-kind business environment, compared to the mainland U.S. It takes time to earn trust in the Hawaiian market, and at the same time, it is easy to lose if a business makes a mistake. When reaching the Hawaiian community, the public relations have to be personal and reflect true caring. It is important to be honest and up front with the public. At the same time, the Hawaii Red Cross does not have to worry about the media being critical of what the chapter is doing. Two out of the three main TV stations in Hawaii – KHON and Hawaii News Now have representatives on the board of the local chapter. KITV also used to have a representative at the board, but that person just left the channel, so it is unclear if they will replace him (Yano, 2015). Having the TV stations involved in the organizations, makes it easy for the Red Cross to get on the morning shows with new products or services. There is also a representative from Oahu Publications – which is Hawaii’s major print media company (“About Oahu Publications,” n.d.). The publications donate ads that the Red Cross can design, which helps spread awareness about their organization. The Hawaii Red Cross also has a good relationship with the radio station KSSK. Growing up in a Hawaiian/white family I have always been surrounded by both cultures; from experiencing what it means to be a local in Hawaii, to experiencing a Haole (or white) culture. I have seen it all in regards to how each culture is different, along with how each culture reacts to one another; however, there is one issue, that when observing both sides of these cultural backgrounds, we see repeated over and over again between the two-that issue is racism. “Prejudice and discrimination are not alien to Hawai’i. Attitudinal surveys show definite racial preferences and sensitivity to color differences.” (Schaefer, pg 278) While a lot of this racism is said to be tied to the migration of the “multicultural nature of the Islands” (pg 278),…

The Philippines have been colonized by the Spaniards and the Americans for centuries, and these two cultures have had a significant impact on the Filipino culture and their identity. Martin and Nakayama note Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck research on cultural values claims that, “Values are the most deeply felt beliefs shared by a cultural group; they reflect a shared perception of what ought to be, and not what is” (p. 99). The Filipinos culture has had influences from civilization prior to the Spanish occupation, Spanish colonization, and American society. Oreiro (2014) mentions, “Unlike many others within the Pan-Asian grouping, Filipinos have the distinction of being the only groups of immigrants to come from an American colony” (p. 6). In order…
