All dog breeds fall into groups. These groups organize dog breeds into categories to distinguish what the dogs were bred to do. There is the Herding Group, where the dogs were primarily used for herding livestock. The Sporting Group was used for flushing out and retrieving game birds. The Toy group was mostly bred to be a lap dog, to look as appealing as possible. Hounds were bred for hunting, either by sight or smell. Terriers were used for "digging" out vermin and small game. The dogs of the Working Group had jobs to do, some were used for guarding, rescue work or pulling carts or a sled. Lastly the Non-Sporting group are dog breeds that did not fit into any other category, they make up a wide variety of diverse breeds.
