Typically, a K9s career will last no longer than 6-8 years. There will be some dogs that are active duty for longer but its rare. With age the dogs will lose some of the traits needed for a successful canine officer career, indicating that it is time for the dog to retire. Most of the time, the dog lives with its handler while off duty and becomes a member of the family, this is a great way for the dog and handler to develop an even stronger bond. If the handler isn’t paying attention to the dog they could miss an important sign. While the dogs job is what is most important it is vital that they still know that their handler is the boss, they need to know that when they hear a command to listen to it to get praise if they don’t listen the reward is not quite the same.
