The oval foot is a combination of the cat-like and the hare foot, and can be found on breeds where both endurance and speed are important. Large feet were developed by breeders for travelling in snow or sand or for swimming. Whereas small feet were bred for dogs travelling in rough and rocky terrain.
It is far safer to have your dogs feet clipped rather than trimmed with scissors, therefore they should always be clipped. This can be done pre or post-bath, but it is easier
