Dog Breeding Research Paper

One of the topics that I found out about, that I believe is related to evolution is dog breeding. Through the years, we have heard of people paying a lot of money for a very specific breed of dog. This is called artificial selection, where we as humans direct the trait that gets passed down to a future generation of a dog. Sometimes that is taking characteristics of one breed and mixing it with another breed that also has certain characteristics that are appreciated.
There are not any new breeds of dogs (golden retrievers and poodles can still breed, for example) but now there are purebreds and then several variations of mixed breeds. There is nothing “natural” about the silky-smooth fur, non allergen, or even the super sweet, loving personality

There were several pictures of purebreds of all different types that back in 1915 were healthy and beautiful and they put them side by side with today’s dog that had legitimate health concerns because of the breeding. For example, “The English bulldog has come to symbolize all that is wrong with the dog fancy and not without good reason; they suffer from almost every possible disease. A 2004 survey by the Kennel Club found that they die at the median age of 6.25 years. There really is no such thing as a healthy bulldog. The bulldog’s monstrous proportions make them virtually incapable of mating or birthing without medical intervention. “ (Elegens, 2012) I was drawn to the the German Shepherd Dog, according to this article “it is also a breed that is routinely mentioned when people talk about ruined breeds; maybe because they used to be awesome. In Dogs of All Nations, the German Shepherd is described as a medium-sized dog (25 kg /55 lb), this is a far cry from the angulated, barrel-chested, sloping back, 85-pounders (38 kg) we are used to seeing in the conformation ring. There was a time when the German Shepherd could clear a 8.5 ft wall; that time is long gone.” (Elegens,

Jessica Yun J. Lindberg English 1101 6 April 2016 Don’t Bully a Breed The media has given pit bulls a bad reputation and states have begun to support Breed Specific Legislation laws (BSL), but there are many owners who raised their pit bull breeds in correct environments resulting in strong, loyal, and sweet lap-dogs. Although pit bulls have had a few issues that caused deaths or injuries on others, banning pit bulls does not change the fact that all breeds have had incidents of attacking humans and animals. Before pit bulls were perceived as the most dangerous dog, other breeds were in the limelight. Including German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, and Bloodhounds. In the book, The Pit Bull Placebo, Karen Delise, founder of the National Canine Research Council, writes about what she has found in her twenty years researching dog bites. Delise explains that before Bloodhounds were seen as lazy hound dogs, they were viewed as ferocious dogs. This is because they were used for tracking and killing slaves and Indian populations at the time (Delise 20).…

These statistics, however are skewed as the result of pit bulls being recognized by the less informed public as five separate breeds of dogs that look similar (Alvarado np.). Max Alvarado noted that these five breeds are frequently considered to be the: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and Bull Terrier (Alvarado np.). Not only do the breed differences play a part in the unreliable statistics, but also the interbreeding between these five breeds and other breeds of dogs (Alvarado np.). Interbreeding between theses dogs makes the information unreliable due to the fact that when a dog who is only half or a fourth American Pit Bull Terrier counting that animal as a purebred dog if that dog were to attack someone causes pit bulls, which I will continue to refer to them as, to receive a bad rap (Alvarado np.). As a result of pit bulls being feared and perceived as dangerous to society they are often heavily…

Pit bull is the common name for a type of dog. Formal breeds often considered of the pit bull type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The American Bulldog and Bull Terrier are also sometimes included. Many of these breeds were originally developed as fighting dogs from cross breeding bull-baiting dogs and terriers. After the use of dogs in blood sports was banned, such dogs were used as catch dogs in the United States for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt and drive livestock, and as family companions, While mixed breed dogs are often labeled as "pit bulls" if they have certain physical characteristics such as a square shaped head or bulky body type, visual identification…

Abstract: Wisdom Panel’s genetic analysis of a canine with traits that are predominant in the animal shelter supports that Sunny is a mixed breed with terrier blood on both sides of her ancestry tree. This did not support that her breed would have relatively higher susceptibility to mutations as she tested negative for MDR1, and also displays no lameness, behavior, or traits limiting her mobility and neurological state. Introduction: In shelters, there are predominantly medium to large dark-coated dogs who are likely to remain at the shelter twice the length of smaller breeds. A client who adopted a medium dark brown dog, Sunny, sought breed identification to determine Sunny’s genotype for a health-monitoring program within stray dogs allocated…

While conducting research on the domestication of dogs, I found two things in common: studies show that dogs have been domesticated more than once and that the domestication of dogs traces back to the Middle East and Europe. (Saey, 2016; “Where did humans turn wolves into domesticated dogs?”, 2015; “New Take on Man's Friendship With Fido; Surprising findings emerge about domestication.”, 2016). “New Take on Man's Friendship With Fido; Surprising findings emerge about domestication” (2016) explains that, through DNA analysis, a link has been discovered between two different type of dogs in Europe and Asia.
