Whenever the topic of breed specific dog bans comes up, the breeds that come to mind are pit-bulls, pit-bull mixes, and closely related breeds. Some people will say how dangerous and unpredictable they are, while others vouch for the lovely nature of these breeds. Whenever there is a dog attack mentioned in the news, more than likely the report will state that a pit-bull or pit-bull mix that is responsible. Over the years there has been great debate over these breeds and the breed specific dog bans. These bans on pit-bulls, pit-bull mixes, and the closely related dog, should be eliminated. When these bans are put into place, the popularity of the breeds tends to go up with criminals and people who want the image of a tough person. People who do decide to have a dog of one of these breeds, tend to hide them and do not get the dogs the vaccinations that are needed to help protect the dog and the public. The responsible owners suffer because these bans cause the owners have to either give up their precious pets or move to another area altogether. There are too many other options than wasting money on these bans, like enforcing the laws already in place. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ASPCA, states other options are to increase the availability of low-cost sterilization, to focus on the behaviors of the dogs and their owners, and to have penalties that become harsher for dogs that are found to be dangerous. (“Aspca.org/animal-cruelty”). Dogsbite.org claims that breed specific dog bans do work. They state that multiple cities’ pit bull dog bites decreased significantly. The claims might be true if everyone followed the bans on the breeds, but this is simply not the case.
