AGE DISCRIMINATION, OR AGEISM
Does age discrimination exist? I believe that it does, although it is not supposed to exist, but it’s difficult to prove. What are some things that might clue you in that you are being discriminated against due to your age?
• Older workers are being fired or offered buyouts, and younger ones are being hired.
• You are reassigned to unpleasant duties.
• You start hearing comments about your age.
• You stop getting raises.
• You are given low scores on your performance reviews. (Horovitz, 2015)
So how does one ‘fight’ these problems? There probably isn’t much that can be done if you are fired or offered a buyout, unless you are positive it is due to age. Then you can try to fight the layoff by filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Almost one-fourth of the claims filed with the EEOC are age-discrimination matters. • Work in your chosen career
• Work for and with people with whom you get along
• Keep learning; participate in continuing education at your work or, if not offered there, on your own, but in your career field.

Before you leave that job, figure out what you are going to do with the rest of your life. Make it something you really want to do, what you are passionate about; turn a hobby into your next job/career; work part-time or use a flex-time schedule; volunteer, etc. Above all, know yourself. (Sedlar & Miners, 2007) Some people volunteer with an expectation of really helping others, but sometimes that turns into being asked to do mundane tasks instead, so instead of being encouraged and feeling valued, they are hard to keep because they have been ‘tossed’ by the wayside. Think big and realize that happiness does not necessarily come from being successful. Know what truly counts: your health, your belief in yourself, and your passion. (Crandell,

Often older workers are not considered for continuous learning or other development because “they’re on their way out, anyway.” Managers should pay attention to the basis for decision making and selection about training and development opportunities (Bennett-Alexander D., and Hartman L., 2015, p567). The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) should pressure corporations to address age bias and bring their policies up to date. Encourage older workers to pursue job-related training and reward with promotional opportunities.…

The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act of 1990 is amend of the Age Discrimination Act of 1967 which prohibited employers to discriminate against older workers from employee benefits or severance. HR practices such as offering benefits plans such as severance packages, and early voluntary retirement plans are affected by this legislation. Age discrimination claims are common when there is a reduction in workforce, mainly of long time employees. To encourage employers to voluntary leave, employers will often offer severance pay, under the OWBPA it insures that no employee is coerced or pressure into signing legal waivers.…

Ageism is an identity category which has affected my life, and is a topic I have been able to learn more about through this class. Keri DeJong and Barbara J. Love examine ageism and adultism in our society, and explain how ageism is the oppression of young people and elders as age-based social identity groups, and the ways in which access to participation in society and relationships are organized on the basis of age. Ageism has affected decisions about power, voice, and decision making as a result of societal expectations rather than biological differences. An example of ageism which I have experienced is the denial of teenagers to vote until they are eighteen years old. Teenagers may be allowed to engage in political campaigns, and help support…
