Does Western Aid Hasn T Helped Africa?

Decent Essays
As a person who comes from Africa, Rwanda to be specific, I would say that Africa is a large continent for anyone to know all that is taking place in it. For example, I did not know that the USA is the number one food aid supplier in Sudan. From the Film "What Are We Doing Here? Why Western Aid Hasn't Helped Africa" I learned that some western individuals who think that they are donating money to sponsor children in Africa do not know that their money does not help their children specifically. For example, in the film the four young Americans found out that most of the aid that comes from foreign donors is not directly allocated to the rightful children but it goes to other unrelated social sectors such as community centers, clinics, etc.

Sierra Leone to Movie Viewers Know It In plenty of Hollywood productions, third world countries tend to be portrayed as poor, rubbish, and not as good as what Americans see today in the US. People are shown as beaten, tired, and hopeless. In the movie Blood Diamond, Sierra Leone, a country in Africa, is shown as a run-down place with no signs of safety or protection. The people are living in cramped huts, have clothing that is torn, and most of them look feared for their lives.…

World War I was initially a war between the Great European Powers, the Allied and the Central Powers. However, this soon became a total war involving people from all across the globe, as a result of growing European imperialism that has been occurring in the decades prior. European imperialism meant that the colonies of the European countries were obligated to support their parent nations, which led to a massive influx of Sub-Saharan African soldiers towards the war. Most African soldiers predominantly fought for the Allied countries due to the dominance of Great Britain and France in Africa. Although Sub-Saharan African soldiers contributed massively to an Allied victory in World War I, systematic racism meant that they were severely undervalued…

Would people in today’s society want to live in a world where technology, such as phones and computers, didn’t exist or where the world isn’t organized without a proper government to take care of the people? Without the incident that people know as Imperialism, the modern comfort that is given and provided in everyday lives wouldn’t have been made possible. Imperialism is when one country takes over another country to have control over the territory and it’s natives. Although some people believe that the natives were abused and treated unfairly by imperialists, it is actually true that imperialism was beneficial to the world because the world became more technologically advanced and influenced a better form of government. As countries began to become imperialized, imperialists took control and mistreated natives, making their lives hard and miserable.…

Imperialism is defined as when a stronger nation dominates a weaker one, socially and economically. As once Edward W said: “Every empire, however, tells itself and the world that it is unlike all other empires, that its mission is not to plunder and control but to educate and liberate." Here Edward is trying to say that many nations/countries may want to be the superior and alpha one of another, they say it’s for the better rule and to take away control just to put more control. Europe only wanted one thing and it was a competition for colonies. Imperialism created tensions in Europe.…

Imperialism was the believe that one country must dominate another politically, socially, and economically. In the 1870s through 1914 the world experienced their Age of Imperialism. Although Imperialism allowed new resources to be exported to different parts of the world, ultimately Imperialism did not help the world. Imperialism brought more slavery, exploitation in resources in Africa, and the spread of disease. Imperialism mostly involved European countries and Africa and so did the problems that occurred with Imperialism.…

The speaker in the source is implying that imperialism wants one thing. Supposedly an empires quest is to develop freedom and to teach these “savage nations.” However, more often than not, imperialism only ends up in exploitation, not just by civil wars and gun violence, but through the use of technology. Empires modernize “savage nations,” eventually distinguishing the nations values, beliefs, traditions, customs, and culture. Colonization more often than not ends up in the process of homogenization; in this case the process of changing the rest of the world to become more like Britain.…

Until the mid 1800’s, Africa was a melting pot of cultures, with hundreds of different ethnic groups, religions, and languages. Although native Africans had had some contact with Europeans on occasion, nothing could possibly prepare them for the arrival of thousands of European colonists, hailing from highly advanced countries, and with technology, weapons, and laws completely unknown to the Africans. Their goal was to take advantage of the wealth of unexplored land and resources waiting to be claimed, through a practice known as imperialism, when one country conquers another to expand their territory and gain resources. For many Europeans, Africa was seen as a mysterious land of opportunity, waiting to be divided up amongst whoever could lay…
